Triple Crown LRC Comp Rescheduled

Dear Triple Crowners!-

We have rescheduled the Little Rock City Bouldering Competition for Saturday January 7th 2006. An e-mail containing all of the competition particulars will be coming in the next few weeks. The itinerary for the competition will be very similar to the plan that we had for December 3rd. Should the weather be poor on the 7th the competition will be moved to Sunday January 8th.

We also want to send out a very special thank-you to all of the folks who braved the weather and came out to the First Tennessee Pavilion on Sunday for our Speed Climbing and Dyno competition. We raised over $3,000 for Habitat for Humanity! We want to say a very special thank-you to the competitors that donated their cash prizes ($900) to the cause as well—Heath Bailey, Kate Reese, Alli Rainey-Wendling, Ronnie Jenkins, Dave Graham and Nancy Jackson.

The representatives for Habitat for Humanity were brought to tears by the size of the donation, and extremely thankful to the entire climbing community for their support. They reported that, “this money would cover the cost of a roof or floor for a new home for an underprivileged family.” They were especially moved by the fact that the competitors gave back their winnings.

Big thanks to all of our sponsors (Rock/Creek Outfitters, Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, Chaco, Misty Mountain, Oakley, Rockstar Beverages, Arborwear, Montrail, and Metolius), our volunteers, and climbers for helping us make this happen!

Please keep checking the SCC website and the Triple Crown website for updates and information.

**Those participants that cannot attend should contact us by no later than Monday December 19th—

Best Regards,

Jim and Chad

ClimbingGear Joins Castle Rock Initiative

ClimbingGear.com's parent company, Rock/Creek Outfitters, has just joined the initiative to lease Castle Rock in order to make it open to climbers by making a financial gift. As the Southeastern Climbers' Coalition's Web site explains, "Castle Rock is located approximately 3 miles northwest of downtown Jasper, Tennessee. You catch a glimpse of this proud buttress as you drive up the hill towards Foster Falls (look to your right above Castle Rock church). Castle Rock is located on private land and has technically been closed to the climbing public. In the fall of 2004, The Southeastern Climbers Coalition began negotiations with the landowners to open access to this area. A verbal committment has been reached and a lease should be signed during the month of October 2005."

"Castle Rock is approximately 1/2 mile long of 80 to 120 ft. tall bullet sandstone. Castle Rock is known for many 5.11 and 5.12 sport climbs and one of the hardest routes in the state of Tennessee - Apes on Acid (5.13d). Castle Rock is listed as a 4 star (out of 5) crag in Tim Toula's "Rock and Road" guidebook."

If you'd like to contribute or read more about Castle Rock, check out the SEC page here.

Got Dixie Cragger's Atlas?

Okay, so it's not as catchy as "Got Milk?" but hey, if you haven't already heard, the classic Dixie Cragger's Atlas by Chris Watford is back! This guide has been the standard for rock climbers looking for information on the best crags in TN, AL, and GA, but has been out of print.

Watford has revamped the guide, splitting it into two volumes, one focusing on Tennessee, the other on Alabama and Georgia. The new improved Dixie Cragger's Atlas was well worth the wait! Both volumes have a durable cover that won't disintegrate with all the use it'll see.

The Pocket Guide to Tennessee Wall is harvested from the larger Dixie Gragger's Atlas Guide to Tennessee. This smaller guide provides indepth info on T-Wall, the "crown jewel" of southern sandstone climbing.

Pick one up now at ClimbingGear.com. This is a perfect holiday gift for that special climber in your life!

Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner of Patagonia, will appear on the Tavis Smiley show tomorrow, November 29th. On the premise that green business is good business, he devotes 1% of annual sales to grassroots environmental organizations. Chouinard is also a noted writer, on climbing issues and ethics and, in Let My People Go Surfing, relates his core philosophies that are simultaneously common sense and radical."
